Abel Nagytothy-Toth

Guitarist and musicologist
 

 

Abel Nagytothy-Toth was born in 1928 in Hăghig-Hidvég, Transylvania in what is present-day Romania, by Hungarian father and Armenian mother.

He studied piano and violin from an early age, economics in Budapest and the law in Paris. In Madrid he turned his full attention to the guitar under the tutelage of Regino Sainz de la Maza and the aesthetics of music with Joaquín Rodrigo.

Nagytothy-Toth came to Montreal, Canada, where he founded a Collegium Musicum. Establishing himself as both a soloist and accompanist, he made his New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1958.

 

A founding director of the Guitar Foundation of America, he was a frequent lecturer at conventions and festivals, judged at numerous international guitar competitions, and contributed to musical magazines.

 

Multilingual and a conscientious musicologist, he has discovered, transcribed, edited, and published both lute and guitar chamber music.
